What temperature should a heating pad be?

Around 40 °C, held steadily — not as hot as it can go. Where the safe ceiling is, why cheap heated plush runs too hot, and what a burn actually takes.

Short answer: about 40 °C at the skin, held steadily. Not as hot as the device can go.

Longer answer: the temperature that helps and the temperature that feels impressive are two different numbers, and most products are built to sell the second one.

The number that matters is contact time, not peak heat

Skin damage from heat is a function of temperature and duration together. The foundational work here is Moritz and Henriques, 1947, and its conclusions still underpin the modern standards:

Two things fall out of that table.

Below about 43 °C, sustained contact is broadly fine — which is why that's the range the clinical heat-therapy trials use, and the range worth aiming for whatever you're warming yourself with.

Above about 50 °C, the margin collapses fast. Not a gentle slope. A cliff.

Why "it feels fine" isn't the test

Two reasons the sensation is unreliable.

You acclimatise. Skin adapts to a constant temperature within a couple of minutes, so something that felt too hot at first stops registering as hot at all — while continuing to deliver exactly the same energy.

You fall asleep. The pain response that would normally make you move is the safety mechanism, and it is off for eight hours. This is precisely how people get the mottled, lace-patterned brown staining called erythema ab igne — from repeated exposure well below burn temperature, over weeks.

Anything powered that you might sleep on needs an automatic shut-off. Not a preference. A requirement. An electric pad or a battery-heated toy can hold its temperature all night, and something has to decide when to stop.

Powered versus warmed-once

This distinction matters more than the product categories suggest, so it's worth stating plainly.

A powered heat source — mains pad, battery pack — holds a temperature for as long as you let it. The risk is duration, and the mitigation is a shut-off you can't disable.

A warmed-once heat source — hot water bottle, wheat bag, ours — has no way to add energy after the first minute. It is at its hottest the moment you pick it up and strictly cooler from then on. The risk moves to the front: it's how hot you made it, not how long you left it.

Neither is safe by category. They just fail differently, and the sensible caution is different for each.

Where cheap heated plush sits

This is the specific thing that started us designing our own.

Several inexpensive heated stuffed animals run at around 57 °C. That is not a borderline number — from the table above, it's inside the range where sustained contact matters in seconds rather than hours. Some have no shut-off at all. Almost none publish a temperature figure anywhere, which tells you what they expect you to check.

That combination — a powered heat source, no published temperature, no shut-off, and a product people specifically fall asleep holding — is the worst arrangement of the two risks above, and it's the one thing in this article we'd genuinely tell you to avoid.

Practical version

  • Aim for comfortably warm and boring, around 40 °C. If it's exciting, it's too hot.
  • 30 to 60 minutes, then a break. Continuous low-level heat is what the evidence supports, not a short blast.
  • A layer of clothing between you and any heat source costs you almost nothing and removes most of the risk.
  • Never sleep on anything powered that has no automatic shut-off.
  • With anything microwaved, under-do it. Thirty seconds too long is a much bigger change than it feels like. Go back for another short burst rather than guessing high.
  • If your skin goes mottled or brown-patterned, stop and see a doctor — that's erythema ab igne, and it's a signal you've been running too hot for too long.
